Smartboard donation to a technical university in Mombasa has provided TUM students with a dramatically improved learning experience.
In our unyielding effort to advance digital and technology literacy acrossAfrica, Tokyo Technology Foundation has donated seven smartboards to the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), one of Kenya's oldest technical institutions. The decision to support TUM was compelling, with their reach of nearly 20,000 students, and a clear vision to ‘drive a transformative shift in ICT education and research'. TUM recently founded the Institute of Computing and Informatics (ICI) to create ICT course offerings comparable to the best available in the developed world.
However, TUM faces issues around funding and a shortfall in the quantity and quality of their ICT infrastructure, which has meant their vision of delivering world-class ICT courses in Kenya, faces constant roadblocks. As highlighted by Dr. Fullgence Mwakondo, the director of the Institute of Computing and Informatics:
“While all the Computer Labs are installed with a whiteboard marker, only one Computer Lab is installed with an overhead projector. As a result, the student learning experience and motivation have declined while instructor training effort has been excessive”.
TUM’s pain point was a prime opportunity to demonstrate how our access to high-quality pre-owned IT devices can solve the problems being experienced by crucial Kenyan learning institutions, which we did by donating and installing smartboards in all seven of their ICT labs. This is the first instance of what we envisage will be a long-term infrastructure partnership between Tokyo Technology Foundation and TUM.
